Why These Guidelines Exist
BiteCount's community is a place to share recipes, celebrate progress, and support each other. These guidelines exist so everyone can feel safe being part of it. BiteCount has zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users.
They apply to everything you post or share through BiteCount's Social Features: your username, display name, profile photo, bio, posts, photos, recipes, comments, and messages. They are part of our Terms of Service, so breaking them can lead to the actions described below.
Here is the short version:
- Be kind. No body-shaming, harassment, or hate.
- Keep it healthy. No content that promotes eating disorders, extreme restriction, or self-harm.
- Keep it appropriate. No nudity or sexual content.
- Be honest. No fake credentials, dangerous health claims, or hidden ads.
- Respect people's privacy and work.
Who Can Use Social Features
Social Features are only for users 18 and older. Do not create an account with a false birthday, and do not help someone under 18 get access to Social Features.
Be Kind
Everyone is at a different point in their journey. Encourage people, don't judge them. Do not:
- Comment on anyone's body, weight, size, or appearance in a negative way, including "concern" that is really criticism.
- Harass, bully, threaten, intimidate, or repeatedly contact someone who does not want to hear from you.
- Post hateful content that attacks people based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, or body size.
- Encourage anyone to harm themselves or others.
Keep It Healthy
BiteCount is about building sustainable habits. To protect people who may be vulnerable, do not post content that:
- Promotes, encourages, or glorifies eating disorders, disordered eating, or extreme thinness, including "thinspo," "meanspo," or similar content.
- Promotes extreme calorie restriction, purging, laxative or diuretic misuse, or unsafe fasting.
- Challenges people to eat as little as possible, lose weight as fast as possible, or hit dangerous targets.
- Shares tips for hiding disordered eating from family, friends, or doctors.
- Promotes, encourages, or shows self-harm.
Talking honestly about your own struggles and recovery is welcome. Focus on your experience and what helped, and leave out specific numbers, methods, or images that could harm someone else.
Some words related to eating disorders and self-harm are blocked in posts and usernames. If something you write is blocked, that is why.
Keep It Appropriate
- No nudity, sexual content, or sexually suggestive images.
- Never post, request, or share any sexual content involving a minor. We report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and remove the account.
- Never post, or threaten to post, intimate images of anyone without their consent, including images created or altered with AI.
- No graphic violence or shocking content.
- Profile photos, post photos, and recipe photos are automatically checked by AI before they are saved. Photos that fail the check are not posted. Post captions, comments, and bios are also checked automatically right after they are posted, and text that fails the check may be hidden.
Your progress photos are always private. They cannot be posted or shared, and only you can see them.
Be Honest About Health
- Do not claim credentials you do not have, such as registered dietitian, doctor, nurse, or certified trainer.
- Do not present your opinions or experiences as medical advice, or tell people to ignore their doctor.
- Do not promote products or practices as cures, or promote dangerous products, unapproved drugs, or misuse of medications or supplements.
- Do not post health claims you know to be false.
- Make the nutrition information in recipes you share as accurate as you reasonably can.
Be Genuine
- Do not impersonate another person, creator, brand, or BiteCount.
- Do not create fake accounts, use more than one account, or create a new account to get around a suspension.
- Do not post spam, repetitive content, or engagement bait.
- Do not advertise products, services, or links without our permission. If we allow sponsored content, any paid partnership, free product, or affiliate link must be clearly disclosed in the post.
- Do not buy, sell, or trade followers or high fives.
Respect Privacy and Ownership
- Do not post anyone else's personal information, such as their real name, address, phone number, email, or health information, without their permission.
- Do not post photos of other people without their permission.
- Only post photos, recipes, and other content that you created or have the right to share. If you adapt someone else's recipe, give them credit. Remixing a recipe in BiteCount credits the original automatically.
Usernames and Profiles
Your username, display name, profile photo, and bio follow all of the rules above. In particular, they must not impersonate anyone, be offensive, include personal contact information, or reference eating disorders or self-harm. We may change or reclaim a username that breaks these rules.
Nothing Illegal
Do not use BiteCount to post or promote anything illegal, including the sale of drugs, weapons, or regulated products, or to threaten violence.
Reporting and Blocking
If you see something that breaks these guidelines, report it using the report button on the post, comment, profile, or the message. The BiteCount team reviews reports within 24 hours, and we do not tell the person you reported who reported them.
If an intimate image or video of you has been posted without your consent, email support@bitecountapp.com with the subject line "Removal Request." You do not need a BiteCount account. We remove valid requests within 48 hours. The Intimate Images Shared Without Consent part of our Terms of Service explains what to include.
You can block anyone at any time. You can also hide parts of your profile or turn off Social Features entirely in settings.
BiteCount does not monitor content in real time. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911.
What Happens If You Break These Guidelines
If content clearly breaks these guidelines, we remove it and take action against the account that posted it. Depending on how serious the violation is and whether it has happened before, we may:
- Block the content before it is posted.
- Remove or hide the content.
- Warn you.
- Turn off your access to Social Features, temporarily or permanently.
- Suspend or permanently close your account.
- Report the content or account to NCMEC or law enforcement where required or appropriate.
We may act without warning, especially for serious violations such as sexual content involving minors, threats, or content that puts someone's safety at risk. More details are in the Moderation, Reporting, and Enforcement section of our Terms of Service.
Appeals
If you think we made a mistake, email support@bitecountapp.com with "Appeal" in the subject line and a short description of what happened. We will review your appeal and let you know our decision.
If You Are Struggling
If you are struggling with eating or body image, you can contact the National Alliance for Eating Disorders helpline at 1-866-662-1235. If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, or are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
Changes to These Guidelines
We may update these guidelines as our community and features grow. When we make material changes, we will notify you in the app or by email at least 14 days before they take effect. If you accept the updated guidelines in the BiteCount app before then, they apply to you from the moment you accept.
